Juniperus virginiana, commonly called red cedar, is a broadly conical, sometimes columnar, dense evergreen conifer native to eastern North America. Occurring in fields, bluffs, swamps, and dry rocky glades. Features horizontal branching, and gray-reddish-brown bark which exfoliates in thin strips on mature trees. Dark blue green foliage. Female trees produce round, gray to blackish- green berry-like cone (1/4" diameter) that ripen in fall and are attractive to many birds. 

Easily grown in average, dry to moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates a wide range of soils and growing conditions and has excellent drought resistance. Suitable for large screens, naturalized areas, and as a landscape specimen. Avoid planting near apple trees.
