Latin Name: Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm'

Common Name: Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan

Zones: 3–9

Height & Spread: 24–36 inches tall, spreading 18–24 inches wide

Descriptive Features: An enduring garden classic and Perennial Plant Association Hall of Fame winner (1999 Perennial Plant of the Year), forming an upright, rhizomatous clump that slowly spreads to form dense colonies. Sturdy, branching stems carry leathery, dark green, lance-shaped foliage and are covered from midsummer through fall in masses of large, 3–4 inch golden-yellow daisy flowers with prominent dark brown-black center cones. Dense seed heads that follow provide winter interest and feed birds. Extremely easy-care, drought-tolerant once established, and adaptable to clay, gravelly, or average garden soils. A magnet for butterflies and pollinators, and largely left alone by deer and rabbits. One of the most widely planted perennials for sunny borders, mass plantings, and naturalized landscapes; note it can be prone to septoria and angular leaf spot in humid conditions with poor air circulation — 'American Gold Rush' is a disease-resistant alternative if that's a concern.
