Latin Name: Rudbeckia triloba 'Prairie Glow'
Common Name: Prairie Glow Brown-Eyed Susan
Zones: 3–9
Height & Spread: 3–4 feet tall, spreading 1–2 feet wide
Descriptive Features: A bushy, densely branched selection of the native three-lobed coneflower, valued for its fiery bicolor blooms — burnt orange to rusty red-orange petals tipped in bright gold surrounding a dark chocolate-brown center cone. Sturdy, bronzy-purple stems support a well-branched habit that produces heavier flower cover than the straight species. Blooms profusely from midsummer through fall without needing to be deadheaded, timing its peak to pick up right as 'Goldsturm' begins to fade. The basal rosette of three-lobed leaves persists through winter as attractive ground cover, and dried seed heads left standing feed goldfinches through the cold months. A short-lived biennial or perennial that readily self-seeds to naturalize over time. Deer-resistant, tolerant of drought and clay soil, and a strong draw for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Excellent for the middle of borders, meadow plantings, or naturalized areas in full sun.
