Lobelia Cardinalis 1Gal

Lobelia cardinalis, commonly called cardinal flower is a perennial native to eastern, central, and southern North America. Occurring in moist locations along streams, springs, swamps and in low wooded areas. It is a somewhat short-lived, clump-forming perennial featuring erect, terminal spikes of large, tubular, cardinal red flowers (rising typically to a height of 2-3'). Leaves are finely toothed, lance-shaped and dark green. Late summer bloom period. Flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. 

Easily grown in rich, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Needs constant moisture and can tolerate brief flooding. Will tolerate full sun in cool, northern climates, but otherwise appreciates part shade. Mulching will help retain soil moisture and will protect the root system in cold winter climates. Suitable for native pollinator gardens, butterfly gardens, rain and water gardens, moist borders and garden beds, woodland shade gardens, wet meadows and along streams and ponds.
