Latin Name: Phlox paniculata 'Blue Paradise'

Common Name: Blue Paradise Garden Phlox

Zones: 4–8

Height & Spread: 2–3 feet tall, spreading 1–2 feet wide

Descriptive Features: Introduced by renowned Dutch nurseryman Piet Oudolf in 1990, this garden phlox is one of the bluest cultivars available and a true color chameleon — sweetly, spicy-vanilla-clove-fragrant flowers open pale blue at dawn, deepen to a rich violet-blue by day, and shift toward deep indigo to violet-red by evening, giving the impression of an ever-changing plant. Rounded flower clusters feature soft white centers with a tiny red eye, held on striking, ornamental deep purple stems above an upright column of dark green, narrowly lance-shaped foliage. Blooms for weeks from mid to late summer, rich in nectar and a strong draw for hummingbirds, butterflies, and birds. Good resistance to powdery mildew, though good air circulation is still recommended to keep the fungus at bay. Intolerant of drought and needs consistent moisture, performing best in climates with milder summers rather than intense heat and humidity. Deer-resistant and tolerant of clay soil. An outstanding choice toward the back of borders, cottage gardens, or cutting gardens in full sun to light shade.
