Hibiscus Moscheutos 2Gal

Hibiscus moscheutos, commonly known as hardy hibiscus or swamp rose mallow, is a sturdy, somewhat shrubby, woody-based perennial native to eastern and central North America. Occurring in wet spots, such as marshes, swamps, floodplains, riverbanks, moist meadows, and moist woods. Showy, hollyhock-like flowers (each 4-6" diameter) have five overlapping white, creamy white or pink petals with reddish-purple to dark crimson bases which form a sharply contrasting central eye. Individual flowers last only a day, but new flowers open in a rapid succession over a long July to September bloom period. Blooms are attractive to butterflies and other pollinators. Seed capsules will float on water which facilitates seed dispersal. 

Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun. Best in moist, organically rich soils, but does well in average garden soils as long as those soils are not allowed to dry out. Regular deep watering is recommended. Tolerant of heat and humidity. Tolerates some light shade, but full sun and regular air circulation produces the best flowers and the strongest stems, and the best environment for resisting diseases. Plant in locations protected from wind to minimize risk of wind burn. Plants will benefit from regular fertilization during the growing season. New growth shoots are slow to emerge in spring. Suitable for moist borders, low and wet areas in the landscape, rain gardens, along streams and ponds, or as a temporary summer screen or hedge. Can be grown in large containers.
