Latin Name: Pennisetum orientale 'Karley Rose'
Common Name: Karley Rose Oriental Fountain Grass
Zones: 5–9
Height & Spread: 24–30 inches tall (with flower plumes), spreading 24–30 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A standout selection of oriental fountain grass, prized for its rich, rosy-purple flower spikes and exceptionally long, prolific bloom season — often flowering continuously from early summer well into fall, longer than most other fountain grass cultivars. Forms a dense, fine-textured, arching mound of narrow, glossy green foliage that provides soft movement and texture through the growing season. Fuzzy, smoky-rose to mauve-pink bottlebrush plumes rise gracefully above the foliage on slender stems, fading to a warm tan as they age and persisting as attractive seed heads well into winter if left standing, providing food and shelter for birds. Foliage turns golden-yellow in fall before fading to tan for winter. Unlike straight Pennisetum alopecuroides, this species is generally sterile or nearly so, minimizing unwanted self-seeding. Extremely low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, adaptable to a wide range of soils, and more heat- and humidity-tolerant than many other fountain grasses. Deer-resistant, needing only a late-winter cutback before new growth resumes. Its long bloom season and soft rosy color make it an excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, or containers in full sun to light shade.
