Descriptive Features: A Perennial Plant Association 2012 Perennial Plant of the Year and one of the most widely planted shade perennials, prized for its luminous, frosted-silver foliage that brightens dark corners of the garden nearly year-round. Heart-shaped leaves emerge with a striking silvery-white overlay accented by fine, contrasting dark green veins, creating a shimmering, almost metallic effect that holds up remarkably well through the heat of summer, unlike many similarly variegated plants. In early to mid-spring, dainty sprays of tiny, sky-blue, forget-me-not-like flowers rise on wiry stems above the emerging foliage, offering a delicate, cheerful counterpoint to the bold silver leaves and drawing early-season pollinators. Slow to establish but long-lived and low-maintenance once settled, gradually forming a substantial clump over several years. Notably resistant to slugs and snails compared to plain-leaved Brunnera varieties. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, and tolerant of dry shade once established, though it performs best with consistent moisture in rich, well-drained soil. An outstanding choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting shrubs, or as a striking textural and color contrast to hostas, ferns, and heucheras in part shade to full shade.
