Latin Name: Sedum 'Autumn Joy' (Hylotelephium 'Herbstfreude')
Common Name: Autumn Joy Stonecrop
Zones: 3–9
Height & Spread: 18–24 inches tall, spreading 18–24 inches wide
Descriptive Features: One of the most iconic and widely planted upright sedums, forming a sturdy, substantial clump of thick, fleshy, blue-green succulent leaves that provide season-long structure. Large, broccoli-like flower buds develop through summer atop stout stems, opening in late summer into flattened, broad clusters of tiny star-shaped flowers that transition through a striking color progression — from soft pink to deep rosy-red, and finally to rich coppery-bronze as fall sets in. The dried flower heads and foliage persist through winter, offering excellent seasonal interest and a food source for birds if left uncut. Extremely low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and untroubled by deer or rabbits. A dependable, long-lived performer and a magnet for bees and butterflies during its long bloom season. Excellent for borders, mass plantings, rock gardens, or as a shrub substitute in full sun.
