Latin Name: Buxus sempervirens ‘Dee Runk’

Common Name: Dee Runk Boxwood / Dee Runk Common Boxwood

Zones: 5-8 (some sources list 6-8)

Height & Spread: 6-10 feet tall, spreading 1-3 feet wide

Descriptive Features: A rigidly columnar, slow-growing selection of common boxwood, valued as one of the best narrow, upright boxwoods for formal designs. Forms a dense, tight, pillar-like evergreen of glossy, dark green leaves on horizontal to slightly upward branching, and fills out right to the ground. The small oval leaves stay dark green through winter. In April and May, small, creamy-white to pale green flowers appear that are inconspicuous but attract bees. Takes pruning exceptionally well and can be trimmed at any time, which makes it a natural for formal hedges, topiary, and containers as well as vertical accents. Its narrow footprint suits tight spaces such as entries, narrow beds, and along walls. Best in full sun to part shade in average to moist, well-drained soil, with a definite preference for alkaline conditions. Deer- and rabbit-resistant. Like other common boxwoods, it can be susceptible to boxwood blight and leafminer, so choose carefully where blight is a concern. An excellent choice as an exclamation-point accent, narrow screen, formal hedge, or topiary in full sun to part shade.
