Latin Name: Allium lusitanicum 'Summer Beauty'
Common Name: Summer Beauty Ornamental Onion
Zones: 4–9
Height & Spread: 18–24 inches tall, spreading 12–18 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A tidy, long-blooming ornamental onion and recipient of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Gold Medal Award, forming a neat mound of upright, strappy green foliage that turns gold in fall. Rounded, two-inch umbels packed with lavender-pink, bell-shaped flowers rise on sturdy stems above the foliage from early to late summer — a notably longer bloom window than many alliums. Its sterile flowers won't self-seed around the garden, making it well-behaved for mass plantings and borders. Fragrant and excellent as a cut flower, it draws bees and butterflies while remaining unappealing to deer and rabbits. A vigorous, long-lived performer for borders, rock gardens, or containers in full sun to part shade.
