Latin Name: Sedum spurium 'John Creech'
Common Name: John Creech Caucasian Stonecrop / Two Row Stonecrop
Zones: 3–9
Height & Spread: 2–4 inches tall, spreading 10–24 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A vigorous, low-growing, mat-forming groundcover native to the Caucasus region, valued for how quickly it fills in and smothers weeds. Small, scalloped, bright green succulent leaves are arranged in two rows along creeping, branching stems that root at the nodes as they spread, forming a dense, ground-hugging carpet. Newer growth near the stem tips stays evergreen and often turns deep burgundy in fall. Tiny, star-shaped pink to pinkish-purple flowers appear in dense clusters atop short upright stems from late spring into summer (sometimes lingering into early fall), attracting butterflies and other pollinators. Thrives in poor, sandy, or gravelly soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established, tolerating some light shade as well as full sun. Deer- and rabbit-resistant and virtually maintenance-free. An excellent choice for rock gardens, edging, slopes, green roofs, or cascading over walls.
