Latin Name: Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln'

Common Name: Hameln Dwarf Fountain Grass

Zones: 5–9

Height & Spread: 18–24 inches tall (2–3 feet with flower plumes), spreading 18–24 inches wide

Descriptive Features: One of the most widely planted dwarf fountain grasses, valued for its compact scale and reliable early bloom, offered as a more manageable alternative to the larger straight species. Forms a dense, tidy, arching mound of narrow green foliage that stays neat throughout the season. In mid to late summer, soft, bristly, tan to creamy-white bottlebrush flower spikes rise just above the foliage in abundance, blooming earlier and more prolifically than many other fountain grass cultivars, and persist as attractive seed heads well into winter if left standing, offering food and shelter for birds. Foliage turns warm shades of gold and copper in fall before fading to tan for winter. Extremely low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, adaptable to a wide range of soils. Deer-resistant, needing only a late-winter cutback before new growth resumes. Its compact size and dependable performance make it an excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, edging, or containers in full sun to light shade.
