Latin Name: Symphyotrichum novae-angliae 'Purple Dome' (also classified as Aster novae-angliae 'Purple Dome')

Common Name: Purple Dome New England Aster

Zones: 4–8

Height & Spread: 18–24 inches tall, spreading 18–24 inches wide

Descriptive Features: A compact, exceptionally uniform selection of native New England aster, discovered as a naturally dwarf mutation and prized for its neat, mounded habit that requires no staking or pinching — a welcome trait compared to the taller, sometimes floppy species. Forms a dense, rounded dome of coarse, medium green foliage. In late summer into fall, the entire mound is smothered in an abundance of rich, violet-purple daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centers, providing a vibrant, long-lasting show right as many other perennials are winding down for the season. An outstanding late-season nectar source, drawing bees, butterflies, and migrating Monarchs in large numbers, and the seed heads provide valuable food for finches and other birds if left standing into winter. Adaptable to a range of soils from clay to sandy loam, and appreciates consistent moisture, though it tolerates average garden conditions well once established. Deer-resistant, low-maintenance, and reliably cold-hardy. An excellent choice for the front to middle of borders, mass plantings, cottage gardens, or pollinator and cutting gardens in full sun.
