Descriptive Features: A cherished garden heirloom discovered as a chance sport in Verdun, France in 1858, and named the Perennial Plant Association's 2016 Perennial Plant of the Year and a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit recipient. Forms a vigorous, compact, mounding clump of deeply divided dark green foliage, from which tall, wiry, gracefully branching stems rise in late summer to hold single, 2–3 inch pure white flowers with a ring of bright yellow stamens surrounding a chartreuse center. Blooms for four to eight weeks from August into September or October, providing vital late-season color and nectar for butterflies and pollinators just as many other perennials begin to fade. Slow to emerge in spring, making it an ideal companion for masking the dying foliage of spring bulbs. Spreads gradually via rhizomes to naturalize into a well-behaved colony over time, without becoming aggressive. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, tolerant of urban pollution, and low-maintenance once established, though it dislikes being disturbed or moved. Performs best in partial shade with rich, loose, consistently moist, well-drained soil — protection from hot midday sun is important in warmer climates. An elegant choice for borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, or naturalized woodland-edge plantings.
