Latin Name: Nipponanthemum nipponicum (formerly classified as Chrysanthemum nipponicum or Leucanthemum nipponicum)
Common Name: Nippon Daisy / Montauk Daisy
Zones: 5–9
Height & Spread: 2–3 feet tall, spreading 2–3 feet wide
Descriptive Features: A distinctive, shrub-like perennial native to the coastal cliffs of Japan, valued for its unusually late bloom time and sturdy, woody-based structure that sets it apart from typical daisies. Forms a dense, rounded mound of thick, glossy, dark green, spoon-shaped leaves that provide attractive year-round texture, remaining evergreen in milder climates. In September and October — much later than most Shasta-type daisies, and a valuable time when many other perennials have finished for the season — large, single white daisy flowers with prominent yellow centers cover the plant in a dramatic, late-season display, often persisting until the first hard frost. A strong late-season nectar source for bees and butterflies. Notably tolerant of salt spray and coastal conditions (having naturalized along the Montauk, New York coastline, giving rise to its popular common name), as well as heat, humidity, and drought once established. Benefits from a hard pruning in late spring to encourage bushier, more compact growth and prevent legginess, since the woody base can otherwise sprawl if left unchecked. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance. An excellent choice for coastal gardens, mixed borders, foundation plantings, or as a substitute for a small flowering shrub in full sun.
