Descriptive Features: The original purple coral bells, named the Perennial Plant Association’s 1991 Perennial Plant of the Year, and still among the most widely planted heucheras. Forms a loose, mounding clump of large, glossy, maple-shaped leaves in deep purple-bronze to mahogany, with striking beet-red to metallic amethyst undersides. The foliage fades to bronze-green in high summer heat, then regains richer color in fall. It is semi-evergreen to evergreen, keeping its color through much of the winter. In late spring to midsummer, wiry, dark red stems carry airy sprays of tiny cream to blush-white bell-shaped flowers well above the foliage, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies and making dainty cut flowers. Adaptable to full sun in cooler climates through full shade, though consistent moisture is needed in more sun. It is also salt-tolerant. Removing faded flower stalks encourages continued bloom, and division every three to four years keeps clumps vigorous. An excellent choice for edging, mass plantings, borders, containers, or as a dark foil beside silver or golden-leaved companions in full sun to full shade.
