Latin Name: Eupatorium maculatum 'Phantom'

Common Name: Phantom Joe Pye Weed

Zones: 4–8

Height & Spread: 3–4 feet tall, spreading 2–3 feet wide

Descriptive Features: A compact, dwarf Joe Pye weed bred by Herbert Oudshoorn from a cross of E. maculatum 'Atropurpureum' and E. rugosum, offering the classic native look at a shorter, more manageable garden scale. Forms an upright, clump-forming perennial with coarse, dark green leaves arranged in whorls on sturdy stems, the foliage sometimes taking on a chocolate-brown cast as the season progresses. In midsummer through early fall, attractive, dome-shaped clusters of tiny, rosy-purple to wine-red flowers top the plant, creating a long-lasting, fragrant display that's a favorite of butterflies and other pollinators. Blooms give way to fuzzy seed heads that persist into late fall, adding continued interest and feeding songbirds if left standing. Highly rated for its excellent disease resistance and strong flower production. Tolerant of a range of soil conditions and moisture levels, from consistently moist to more average garden soil. Heat- and shade-tolerant, deer-resistant, and low-maintenance, needing no staking thanks to its sturdy, compact habit. An excellent choice for perennial borders, rain gardens, pollinator plantings, or mixed containers in full sun to part shade.
