Descriptive Features: A compact, richly colored switchgrass selected for its early and dramatic red coloration, beginning to blush burgundy-red at the leaf tips in early summer and deepening into a rich wine-red across the entire plant by late summer and fall — one of the most reliably colorful red switchgrass cultivars available. Forms a tight, upright clump of fine-textured green-and-red foliage that stays neat and doesn't flop. In late summer, airy, reddish-pink flower panicles rise above the foliage in a delicate cloud, adding soft texture and movement, and mature to a fluffy tan that persists as attractive seed heads well into winter if left standing, providing food and shelter for birds. As a native prairie grass with a deep, fibrous root system, it's highly adaptable to a wide range of soils, from wet to dry, and tolerates both occasional flooding and drought once established. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance, needing only a late-winter cutback before new growth resumes.
