Descriptive Features: A compact, cool-season selection of tufted hair grass whose German name, "Goldtau," translates to "golden dew" — a fitting description of its airy, shimmering flower panicles. Forms a low, dense, mounding tussock of fine-textured, dark green, semi-evergreen foliage that stays attractive well into winter. From July through September, thin, wiry stems send up clouds of delicate, chartreuse-yellow inflorescences that catch the light and shimmer in the breeze, gradually maturing to a warm golden-bronze that persists as attractive seed heads into winter — excellent for cutting. Performs best and flowers most abundantly in cooler climates; in warmer regions, it appreciates part shade and consistent moisture, with reduced bloom in intense heat. Semi-evergreen, low-maintenance, and largely pest-free, unpalatable to deer and other herbivores. Its low mounding habit makes it a useful foreground plant to hide the bare lower stems of taller perennials like garden phlox or bee balm.
