Osmunda regalis, commonly called royal fern, is a deciduous fern native to eastern and central North America. Tall and robust, royal ferns form a large rosette of broadly divided bright green fronds. Fertile flower spikes emerge pinkish in spring and turn to an attractive rusty brown.
Easily grown in fertile, humus-rich, consistently moist, well-drained soils. Prefers part to full shade, however it can be tolerant of full sun if given plenty of moisture. Suitable for shady beds, borders, and underplanting, as well as woodlands, rain gardens, and along streams, ponds or water gardens.
