Latin Name: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Golden Mop’ (also sold as ‘Gold Mop’ and ‘Golden Mops’)
Common Name: Golden Mop Threadleaf Falsecypress / Gold Mop Sawara Cypress
Zones: 4-8 (Missouri Botanical Garden lists 5-7)
Height & Spread: 3-5 feet tall (typically 2-3 feet in the first 10 years), spreading 3-6 feet wide
Descriptive Features: A dwarf, slow-growing, mounded Sawara cypress of the filifera type, named for its resemblance to a mop head, and a popular accent plant for bold color and texture. Forms a dense, globe-shaped to broad mounding shrub of fine, stringy, whip-like, thread-like foliage that droops loosely in golden-yellow. New growth emerges gold in spring and the color holds through the season, turning lime green in fall and persisting through winter, with the best gold in full sun. Grows only about 3-6 inches a year and needs little pruning, and if trimmed, only the current season’s new growth should be cut. Thrives in full sun to part shade in average to moist, well-drained soil, and it is extremely tolerant of urban pollution. Protect from drying winter winds in exposed sites, and avoid soggy soil, since root rot, juniper blight, and bagworms can occasionally be issues. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance. An excellent choice as an accent, specimen, or color contrast in rock gardens, borders, foundation plantings, containers, and Asian-inspired designs in full sun to part shade.
