Latin Name: Schizachyrium scoparium 'Twilight Zone'
Common Name: Twilight Zone Little Bluestem
Zones: 3–9
Height & Spread: 30–36 inches tall, spreading 18–24 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A striking little bluestem selection prized for its intensely saturated, moody color palette, offering some of the deepest, most dramatic foliage tones in the genus. Fine-textured blades emerge a powdery silvery-blue in spring and summer, then transition through rich shades of purple and plum before deepening into a smoky, near-black burgundy by fall — a darker, more dramatic display than most other little bluestem cultivars. Forms a tight, upright, clump-forming habit that resists flopping. In late summer to fall, delicate, silvery-white, fluffy seed heads emerge along the upper stems, creating striking contrast against the dark foliage and catching the low autumn light beautifully, while providing food and shelter for birds if left standing. As a native prairie grass with a deep, fibrous root system, it's highly adaptable to poor, dry, sandy, or rocky soils and extremely drought-tolerant once established. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance, needing only a late-winter cutback before new growth resumes. Its dramatic, dark coloring makes it an excellent choice as a moody accent, mass planting, or striking contrast plant in prairie-style or mixed borders in full sun.
