Latin Name: Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks'

Common Name: Blackhawks Big Bluestem

Zones: 3–9

Height & Spread: 4–5 feet tall, spreading 1–2 feet wide

Descriptive Features: A striking, dramatically dark-foliaged selection of Big Bluestem — once the dominant grass of the American tallgrass prairie, earning it the nickname "monarch of the prairie" — bred by Brent Horvath as a seedling of 'Red October.' Dense, slightly arching clumps of blue-green foliage emerge deep green to purple in spring, deepen to burgundy and maroon through summer, and mature to a dramatic near-black by fall, especially in full sun. Three-pronged, purplish seed heads appear from late summer into fall on strong, upright stems that hold their shape through winter, adding architectural interest and providing seed for birds and nesting material for wildlife if left standing. An extensive root system makes this a strong choice for erosion control, though it's somewhat slow to establish. Best in lean to average, well-drained soil, since overly rich or moist conditions can cause floppy growth. Extremely drought-tolerant once established, low-maintenance, and largely trouble-free. An excellent choice for mass plantings, prairie or meadow gardens, screening, borders, or as a bold specimen and cut/dried flower in full sun; pairs well with companions like butterfly weed, native asters, or little bluestem.
