Descriptive Features: A refined hybrid barrenwort valued for improving on traditional varieties with unusually large flowers held on exceptionally long stems, producing weeks of blooms in spring. Bright golden-yellow flowers accented with red-tinged sepals dangle from wiry stems above the foliage, resembling a jester's colorful cap — the source of its playful name. Medium green, heart-shaped, semi-evergreen leaves take on an attractive burgundy cast in cooler temperatures, providing multi-season color even after flowering ends. One of the few perennials capable of thriving in dry shade, tolerating root competition beneath large, thirsty trees where few other plants succeed. Slow to establish and spreads gradually via rhizomes to form an expanding, well-behaved clump over time — mulching while young helps suppress weeds during this period. Trimming off old foliage in late winter makes room for fresh spring growth and can improve flower production. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, drought-tolerant once established, and low-maintenance. An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, erosion control, or groundcover beneath trees and shrubs in part to full shade.
