Descriptive Features: A striking hens and chicks named for its glowing inner color, forming tight rosettes of sharply pointed, silvery blue to blue-green leaves flushed rosy-red at the base — a two-tone effect that intensifies with cooler temperatures for a showy fall or winter display. The mother rosette (hen) spreads steadily in all directions via short stems to produce numerous offset "chicks," gradually forming a colorful colony over time. In midsummer, unique pinkish-purple, star-shaped flowers rise on short, leafy stalks above the foliage, drawing bees and butterflies, though as with most sempervivums the flowering rosette itself dies afterward and is quickly replaced by its offsets. Evergreen and extremely drought-tolerant once established, thriving in lean, gritty, well-drained soil and requiring excellent drainage to avoid rot. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, low-maintenance, and virtually pest- and disease-free, though watch for rust or root rot in overly wet conditions. Especially effective tucked into the cracks and crevices of stone walls, walkways, or troughs. An excellent choice for rock gardens, succulent gardens, edging, or container plantings in full sun.
