Latin Name: Nepeta ‘Chartreuse on the Loose’
Common Name: Chartreuse on the Loose Catmint
Zones: 3-8
Height & Spread: 8-10 inches tall, spreading 20-24 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A compact, mounding catmint from Walters Gardens, notable for bright chartreuse-yellow foliage, unusual in a genus known for gray-green leaves. The small, fragrant, pointed leaves release a pleasant minty aroma when touched and hold their color from early spring through late fall, giving three seasons of interest. In early summer, spikes of lavender-blue flowers rise just above the foliage in bold contrast to the lime-green leaves, and they continue into early fall. Unlike most catmints, it blooms all summer without needing to be cut back, although a hard cutback after the first flush keeps plants compact and can encourage repeat bloom. Drought-tolerant once established, thriving in lean, well-drained soil, but prone to crown rot in overly wet conditions. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, and a draw for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. An excellent choice for the front of borders, edging, mass plantings, or containers in full sun.
