Descriptive Features: A distinctive, first-of-its-kind Proven Winners introduction — the first perennial fern in their lineup — prized for its unique double-crested frond tips that create a ruffled, wave-like texture unlike any traditional Japanese painted fern. Arching fronds display the classic silvery-gray sheen typical of the species, accented by deep burgundy-black stems and midribs on emerging growth, adding rich color contrast to the airy, finely dissected foliage. A vigorous, somewhat taller-growing selection well suited to the middle of a shaded border, forming a low, dense mound that fills in nicely without requiring facer plants. Prefers consistently moist, humus-rich, neutral to slightly acidic soil in a sheltered location; does not tolerate dry conditions well. As with other Japanese painted ferns, parts of the plant are toxic if ingested. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, low-maintenance, and long-lived, dying back to the crown each winter and regrowing reliably each spring — take care not to disturb the crown when it's dormant. An excellent choice as a specimen, groundcover, or textural accent for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or container plantings in part shade to full shade.
