Clethra alnifolia, commonly called summersweet or coastal pepperbush, is a deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. Occurring in swampy woodlands, wet marshes, along stream banks and seashores, and often in sandy soils. Features sweetly fragrant white flowers, which appear in narrow, upright panicles, blooming from mid to late summer. Glossy dark green leaves turn attractive shades of yellow to golden brown in fall. Attracts butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.
Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers part shade and consistently moist, sandy, acidic soils. Tolerant of most light conditions and soils. Remove root suckers unless naturalized look is desired. Suitable for lawns, shrub borders, shade gardens, woodland gardens, naturalized areas, and wild gardens, and along stream banks and pond/water gardens. Effective as a hedge. Plant near patios, walkways, or under windows to enjoy the fragrant late summer blooms.
