Descriptive Features: In cultivation since 1933 and still considered one of the best red astilbes available, boasting the darkest red flowers in the genus and a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. Forms a compact, refined mound of fern-like foliage that emerges mahogany-red in spring before turning dark green with reddish overtones as summer progresses. One of the earliest reds to bloom, densely packed plumes of deep crimson-red flowers rise on upright spires in early to midsummer, each plume made up of hundreds of tiny flowers opening in succession for a long-lasting display. A vigorous, very floriferous grower whose refined foliage stays attractive from spring through fall. Requires consistently moist, organically rich soil, especially if sited in more sun. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, attracts butterflies and bees, and is relatively trouble-free with no significant pest or disease issues. An excellent choice for shady borders, woodland gardens, streamside plantings, edging, or containers in part shade to full shade, with plumes that make lovely fresh or dried cut flowers.
