Latin Name: Sedum spectabile 'Carl' (Hylotelephium 'Carl')

Common Name: Carl Stonecrop

Zones: 3–9

Height & Spread: 18 inches tall, spreading 18–24 inches wide

Descriptive Features: An English introduction distinguished from 'Autumn Joy' by its more compact habit and exceptionally vibrant, brilliant magenta-pink flower clusters, held on reddish stems from late summer into fall — noticeably brighter than similar cultivars like 'Autumn Joy,' 'Brilliant,' and 'Neon.' Forms a dense, upright mound of thick, fleshy, gray-blue-green succulent foliage with slightly serrated, rounded leaves. Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 2012. Sturdy stems support the large flower heads without flopping, and the dried seed heads persist through winter, offering continued interest and food for birds. Extremely drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and untroubled by deer or rabbits; attracts bees and butterflies during its long bloom season. Excellent for borders, rock gardens, mass plantings, and cut or dried arrangements in full sun.
