Rosa Virginiana 3Gal

Rosa virginiana, commonly called Virginia rose, is a woody, deciduous, perennial shrub native to the northeastern United States. Occurring in coastal areas, fields, woodland edges, and roadsides. Bright pink blossoms with yellow centers appear in June. Fragrant 2-inch blooms last for several weeks and attract bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and beetles. Flowers are followed by highly nutritious fruit, called hips (1/2" in diameter), which gradually turn to a shiny scarlet and continue to darken as cold weather sets in. Finches and many other songbirds are especially drawn to the many seeds within the fruit. Fruit that lingers into winter provides a critical food source for birds during lean months when insects are difficult to find. 

Easily grown in sandy dry soils but will also grow in a wide range of other soil types. Prefers full sun or partial shade. Very drought tolerant and is also quite salt tolerant. Grows in an upright form and will form dense, thorny thickets is allowed to spread, proving excellent cover for birds and other wildlife. Suitable for bank stabilization, seaside gardens, hedging and mixed perennial/shrub beds.
