Descriptive Features: One of the latest-blooming red astilbes, part of the Arendsii group developed by famed German nurseryman George Arends. Forms a graceful, fine-textured, fern-like mound of dissected green foliage that emerges tinted deep red-pink in spring before maturing to medium green. Beginning in midsummer and continuing later than most red astilbes, long, scarlet-red, feathery plumes rise on slender, upright stems well above the foliage, making an excellent cut flower. Prefers rich, consistently moist, acidic soil — alkaline conditions can cause yellowing (chlorosis) of the foliage. Attracts bees and butterflies while remaining largely untouched by deer and rabbits. Dried seed heads add texture and interest into fall if left standing. A relatively low-maintenance choice best used as a "thriller" in mixed containers or as a bold accent in shade borders and woodland gardens, performing best in light shade to filtered sun with regular moisture.
