Latin Name: Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Moudry'

Common Name: Moudry Black Fountain Grass / Black-Flowering Fountain Grass

Zones: 5–9

Height & Spread: 18–24 inches tall (to 2–3 feet with flower plumes), spreading 18–24 inches wide

Descriptive Features: A striking dark-flowered fountain grass, its name meaning "black" in Czech, valued for producing some of the darkest flower spikes of any Pennisetum cultivar. Forms a dense, arching mound of coarse, dark green foliage that provides classic fountain grass texture and movement through the season. In late summer to fall, unusually dark, almost black to deep purple-brown bottlebrush flower spikes emerge above the foliage, creating dramatic contrast against the green leaves and looking especially striking backlit by low autumn sun; the spikes gradually fade to a purplish-brown as they mature and persist into winter if left standing, providing texture and food for birds. Foliage turns warm gold and copper tones in fall before fading to tan for winter. Note that unlike sterile modern cultivars, 'Moudry' can self-seed readily in favorable conditions, so deadheading or monitoring for volunteers may be needed to keep it in check. Extremely low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established. Deer-resistant, needing only a late-winter cutback before new growth resumes. An excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, or as a dramatic accent with striking seasonal contrast in full sun to light shade.
