Descriptive Features: A classic, rigidly upright switchgrass valued for its metallic steel-blue foliage and exceptionally strong, non-flopping habit, even in wind and rain. Narrow, stiffly vertical blades form a tight, columnar clump that provides crisp architectural structure without spreading or leaning. In late summer, airy, finely textured pinkish-tan flower panicles rise above the foliage in a delicate haze, adding soft movement, and mature to a fluffy tan that persists as attractive seed heads well into winter if left standing, offering food and cover for birds. Foliage turns a striking bright yellow in fall before fading to tan for winter. As a native prairie grass with a deep, fibrous root system, it's highly adaptable to a wide range of soils, from wet to dry, and tolerates both occasional flooding and drought once established. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance, needing only a late-winter cutback before new growth resumes. Its strict vertical form makes it an excellent choice for formal accents, mass plantings, rain gardens, or as a strong vertical punctuation point in mixed borders in full sun.
