Descriptive Features: A robust, clump-forming native sedge found across nearly all of North America, particularly abundant in the eastern half of the continent. Forms dense tufts of fine-textured, glossy, arching, evergreen-in-mild-climates foliage that provides year-round textural interest. In late spring to midsummer, sturdy culms rise slightly below the foliage height, topped by stiff, greenish, pencil-shaped flower spikes that transition by late summer into deep bronze-brown, bristly seed clusters resembling a fox's tail — the source of its common name. Colonizes gradually via short rhizomes to form small colonies over time. Extremely adaptable to a wide range of wet soils, including clay, and tolerates seasonal flooding or standing water up to several inches deep, though it also handles more typical garden moisture. A valuable wildlife plant, providing cover and nesting material for waterfowl and small mammals, nutritious seed for birds, and serving as a larval host for several moth species. Low-maintenance and largely trouble-free. An excellent choice for rain gardens, bioswales, pond and stream edges, wet meadows, or naturalized wetland restoration plantings in full sun to part shade.
