Latin Name: Phlox subulata 'Eye Shadow'
Common Name: Eye Shadow Moss Phlox / Creeping Phlox
Zones: 2–9
Height & Spread: 4–6 inches tall, spreading 18–20 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A classic harbinger of spring, forming a dense, mat-like carpet of bright green, needle-like evergreen foliage that erupts each spring into a vivid, mounded display of rosy purple flowers with a dark purple eye — a bolder, cooler-toned color than the pinks typical of most creeping phlox. Notably more refined in habit than similar cultivars like 'Emerald Pink,' while retaining the vigorous, easy-growing nature of the popular 'North Hills.' Best used cascading over rock walls, filling in rocky slopes, or lining border fronts, and thrives in sandy, gravelly, or alkaline soils with sharp drainage. Shearing back by half after flowering encourages dense regrowth and even more prolific blooms the following spring. Extremely low-maintenance, deer- and drought-tolerant once established, and a favorite of early-season butterflies. An excellent groundcover, spiller for containers, or companion for spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils in full sun to part shade.
