Latin Name: Leymus arenarius 'Blue Dune' (also sold as Elymus arenarius 'Blue Dune')

Common Name: Blue Dune Lyme Grass

Zones: 4–9

Height & Spread: 2–4 feet tall, spreading 2–3 feet wide

Descriptive Features: One of the brightest blue ornamental grasses available, even more vividly colored than the straight species. Forms an upright, slightly arching clump of coarse, steel-blue to silver-blue leaves that hold their vibrant color throughout the growing season, even in southern climates, and persist attractively into fall and winter. In early to midsummer, wheat-like flower spikes emerge blue-green above the foliage and fade to tan, adding textural interest and working well in cut or dried arrangements. Native to the sand dunes of Western Europe, this rhizomatous grass is exceptionally tolerant of heat, drought, salt spray, and poor, sandy soils, making it a standout choice for coastal or seaside gardens as an alternative to native beach grasses. Spreads by rhizomes — more slowly than the species, but still vigorous enough to warrant containment (in-ground barriers or large containers) if a tidy footprint is desired. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, low-maintenance, and long-lived once established. An excellent choice for dunes, banks, hillsides, erosion control, parking lot medians, xeriscapes, and rock gardens in full sun with lean, well-drained soil.
