Descriptive Features: A fine-textured, low-growing native sedge widely regarded as one of the best lawn and groundcover alternatives for shaded, dry woodland settings. Forms soft, cascading, grass-like tufts of narrow, semi-evergreen, medium-green foliage that stays only a few inches tall, giving it a naturally tidy, meadow-like look with little to no mowing required. Spreads steadily via slender rhizomes to knit together into a dense, weed-suppressing carpet over a few seasons, making it especially effective at naturalizing under trees. Inconspicuous, thread-like flower spikes appear in early to mid-spring, providing an important early-season pollen source for native bees before most other plants have leafed out. Naturally found in the understory of dry, deciduous woodlands — particularly under oaks — making it exceptionally well adapted to dry shade, root competition from trees, and low-fertility soils where turfgrass struggles. Deer-resistant, drought-tolerant once established, and a valuable larval host for several native skipper butterflies. Virtually maintenance-free; an excellent lawn substitute, erosion-control groundcover, or filler between stepping stones and around trees in part shade to full shade.
