Descriptive Features: A compact to medium-sized, golden-foliaged evergreen conifer from Japan, forming a dense, conical to pyramidal shrub or small tree. The small, soft, fern-like sprays are yellow on the outer portions and green on the inner, giving a two-toned glow. The gold color is brightest in the growing season and tends to fade toward green in winter. It is a standout color accent for focal points, foundations, borders, and Japanese-style landscapes. Tolerates shearing, though it is more attractive left to grow naturally. Best in full sun to part sun in moist, well-drained, acidic soil, with some afternoon shade in hot climates to prevent scorch. It is drought-tolerant once established, but does not tolerate high pH, and it should be sheltered from hard winds. Resistant to deer and rabbits and low-maintenance, though spider mites can be an occasional issue in hot, dry spells. An excellent choice as a specimen, accent, hedge, or screen in full sun to part sun.
