Thuja P. ‘Junior Giant’ 7Gal

Latin Name: Thuja plicata × standishii ‘Junior Giant’ (PP31,297)

Common Name: Junior Giant Arborvitae

Zones: 5-8 (some sources list 4-9)

Height & Spread: 15-20 feet tall, spreading 5-8 feet wide (some sources list up to 10 feet)

Descriptive Features: A compact, patented selection bred from the popular ‘Green Giant’, offering the same dense, deep green foliage and strong performance on a more manageable scale, with a maximum height of about 20 feet compared to 40-60 feet for its parent. Forms a dense, upright, pyramidal, evergreen tree with fine-textured, scale-like sprays that stay green year-round and need little pruning. Grows at a moderate to fairly quick rate, and resists ice and snow damage. A smart fit for privacy screens, windbreaks, hedges, and borders on smaller properties, and it is low enough to plant under power lines. Spaced about 5 feet apart, it knits into a solid hedge. Thrives in full sun to part shade in average to moist, well-drained soil, and shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. Adaptable to most soil types and pH, with a thick winter mulch helpful in exposed or colder spots. When trimming, cut back only the current season’s new growth and avoid cutting into bare wood. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance. An excellent choice for privacy hedges, screens, windbreaks, and vertical accents in full sun to part shade.
