Latin Name: Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Lightning Strike'

Common Name: Lightning Strike Variegated Feather Reed Grass

Zones: 4–9

Height & Spread: 3 feet tall (to 4 feet with flower plumes), spreading 2–2.5 feet wide

Descriptive Features: A boldly variegated sport of the classic 'Karl Foerster,' forming a strong, upright, mounding column of narrow foliage striped with a wide creamy-white center and crisp green edges — a striking twist on the typical feather reed grass palette that illuminates borders from spring through fall. In early to midsummer, sterile flower plumes emerge green before shifting through soft purple-pink and lavender tones, maturing to a warm golden-tan that persists through fall and into winter if left uncut, offering excellent long-lasting interest in fresh or dried arrangements. As a sterile hybrid, it won't self-seed or become weedy, and its compact, non-spreading habit keeps it tidy and well-behaved in the border. Best cut back to the ground in late winter to make way for fresh spring growth. Rust-resistant, drought-tolerant once established, and deer- and rabbit-resistant. An excellent choice for vertical accents, mass plantings, or repeated rhythm along walkways and borders in full sun to part shade with moist, well-drained soil.
