Descriptive Features: A vibrant, early-blooming member of the Japanese astilbe group, valued for its glossy dark green foliage that emerges tinged with bronze-red in spring before maturing to deep green. Dense, triangular, pyramidal spikes of rich magenta-red to deep crimson flowers rise on sturdy stems in early to midsummer — ahead of most other astilbe types — creating dramatic contrast against the foliage. Forms a compact, upright, mounding clump that fills in nicely for mass plantings and edging. Notably adaptable to more sun than many astilbes, particularly in cool-summer climates, though it still performs best with consistently moist, rich, slightly acidic soil. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, low-maintenance, and attractive to butterflies. An excellent choice for shaded borders, container plantings, streamside or pond-edge sites, and woodland or cottage gardens in part sun to full shade.
