Descriptive Features: A dramatic, dark-foliaged bugleweed prized for its glossy, deeply scalloped leaves in the darkest near-black purple of any Ajuga cultivar, holding their rich color exceptionally well throughout the growing season, even in more sun. Forms a low, dense, quickly spreading mat via above-ground runners, making it an efficient, weed-suppressing groundcover. In mid to late spring, short spikes of vivid deep blue to violet-blue flowers rise just above the glossy foliage, creating striking contrast against the dark leaves and drawing bees and other early-season pollinators. Evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on climate, and notably more heat- and humidity-tolerant than many other Ajuga cultivars, reducing the risk of crown rot in less-than-ideal conditions. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, and its vigorous spreading habit — while excellent for quickly covering ground — means it's best sited where its growth is welcome, such as under trees, along slopes, or as a lawn alternative, since it can spread beyond its intended bounds if not contained. An excellent choice for shaded groundcover, edging, rock gardens, or container plantings in part shade to full sun with average, well-drained soil.
