Descriptive Features: A classic, highly regarded Japanese Asian pear cultivar, valued for its reliable productivity and distinctively sweet, spicy-flavored fruit reminiscent of butterscotch. Forms a rounded, deciduous tree with glossy, dark green, finely serrated foliage that turns attractive shades of orange and red in fall. In early to mid-spring, the tree is covered in a profuse, showy display of white blossoms before leafing out, providing an important early nectar source for bees. Fruits ripen in late summer to early fall as medium-sized, round, russet-brown, apple-shaped pears with a crisp, juicy, refreshingly sweet flesh and characteristic caramel-like flavor notes — best enjoyed fresh rather than cooked, unlike European pears. Requires a different Asian or European pear variety nearby for cross-pollination to ensure good fruit set. Precocious and highly productive once established, often requiring fruit thinning to prevent overbearing and improve fruit size. Moderately resistant to fire blight compared to some other pear varieties, though good air circulation and proper pruning help minimize disease pressure. Adaptable to a range of soils with good drainage; benefits from full sun for the best fruit production and flavor. An excellent choice for home orchards, edible landscaping, or as an ornamental spring-flowering and fall-fruiting specimen tree in full sun.
