Latin Name: Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis 'Skycole' (sold as Skyline®)

Common Name: Skyline Thornless Honeylocust

Zones: 3–8

Height & Spread: 45–50 feet tall, spreading 30–35 feet wide

Descriptive Features: One of the most widely planted honeylocust cultivars, valued for its distinctive, refined pyramidal form and notably more upright habit than the species — taller than it is wide, with a strong central leader and branches that emerge from the trunk at nearly 90-degree angles. Fine, lacy, pinnately compound dark green foliage casts light, dappled shade below and turns an outstanding golden-yellow in fall. Thornless and essentially seedless (a rare fruit-bearing pod occasionally appears), eliminating the litter and hazards associated with the wild species. Extremely adaptable to poor, dry, or wet soils and tolerant of road salt and urban pollution, making it a popular street and shade tree. Fast-growing with a long lifespan (70+ years). Best sited well above pedestrian traffic and away from power lines given its eventual high canopy; watch for honeylocust plant bug, spider mite, or webworm in areas of heavy honeylocust planting. An excellent choice as a specimen, shade, or street tree in full sun.
