Carpinus caroliniana, commonly called American Hornbeam, is a deciduous, small to medium sized, understory tree native to eastern North America. Occurring in rich moist woods, valleys, rocky slopes along streams, and ravine bottoms. Features a smooth, gray trunk with distinctive muscle-like fluting. Flowers in male and female catkins appear in spring. Female catkins give way to clusters of winged nutlets. Serrated, dark green leaves turn shades of yellow, orange and red in fall. Attractively shaped, low maintenance tree.

Easily grown in average, medium moisture soil in part shade to full shade. Prefers organically rich, moist soils. Suitable for lawns, naturalized woodland areas, and as an understory tree for shady site.
