Latin Name: Schizachyrium scoparium 'Cinnamon Sticks' ('Sacha')

Common Name: Cinnamon Sticks Little Bluestem

Zones: 3–9

Height & Spread: 30–36 inches tall, spreading 12–15 inches wide

Descriptive Features: A vigorous, strictly upright little bluestem selected for its narrow, columnar habit and rich, warm coloring, making it especially useful as a vertical accent in tighter garden spaces. Fine-textured, powdery blue-green blades form a dense, tightly clumping column through summer, transforming in fall into a striking blend of cinnamon-red, rust, and copper tones that persist well into winter. In late summer to fall, delicate, silvery-white, fluffy seed heads emerge along the upper stems, catching the light beautifully and adding soft textural contrast against the warm foliage color, while providing food and shelter for birds if left standing. As a native prairie grass with a deep, fibrous root system, it's highly adaptable to poor, dry, sandy, or rocky soils and extremely drought-tolerant once established. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance, needing only a late-winter cutback before new growth resumes. Its slender, upright form makes it an excellent choice for narrow borders, vertical accents, mass plantings, or naturalized prairie-style plantings in full sun.
