Latin Name: Astilbe × arendsii 'Bridal Veil' ('Brautschleier')
Common Name: Bridal Veil Astilbe / False Spirea
Zones: 4–9
Height & Spread: 24–28 inches tall, spreading 18–22 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A reliable, free-flowering Arendsii hybrid and recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, forming a compact, clump-forming mound of glossy, deep green, fern-like foliage. In early to midsummer, hundreds of tiny, densely packed ivory-white flowers open in succession within luminous, gracefully arching, pyramidal plumes held above the foliage on sturdy stems — a soft, romantic display that has made it a favorite for moon gardens and all-white plantings. The long-lasting flower plumes fade to a rich caramel color, adding winter interest if left uncut, and also make excellent cut flowers. Requires consistently moist, organically rich soil and struggles quickly if allowed to dry out, especially in more sun. Heavy shade tolerant, deer- and rabbit-resistant, and attractive to butterflies, with an overall trouble-free, low-maintenance nature. An excellent choice for shade borders, woodland gardens, mass plantings, or as a softening backdrop to bolder shade foliage in part shade to full shade.
