Latin Name: Astilbe chinensis 'Visions'
Common Name: Visions Chinese Astilbe
Zones: 4–9
Height & Spread: 14–16 inches tall, spreading 12–15 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A compact, dense Chinese astilbe forming a tidy foliage mound of deeply incised, coarsely textured, bronze-green leaves. In mid to late summer, thick, upright, pyramidal panicles of sweetly fragrant, raspberry-pink flowers rise on sturdy stems — emerging a peachy pink before opening to their full raspberry hue — providing a dramatic, noble presence in the shade or part-sun garden. As a member of the Chinese astilbe group, it offers notably better sun and drought tolerance than most Arendsii hybrids, though it still performs best with consistently moist soil. Bee-friendly and a magnet for pollinators, while remaining deer- and rabbit-resistant. Dried seed heads can be left in place for continued ornamental interest into fall. An excellent choice for shady borders, woodland gardens, mass plantings, or the front of cottage-style beds in full sun to full shade, and makes a lovely fragrant cut or dried flower.
